Opening and welcome

Chair Dr. Nguyen Tien Thong greeted participants and thanked them for joining the online meeting. He then announced the agenda of the meeting.

Overview of the 1^st year project activities

Prof. Ari Kokko summarized the project’s Work Packages and reviewed the activities of the project in 2020, the first year of the project.

Dr. Nguyen Tien Thong commented that the project needs an extension because the Covid 19 pandemic has influenced the implementation and caused delays on most project activities.

CBS should draft the letter to propose for extension

Overview of Vietnam’s electronic sectors

Dr. Phan Van Cuong and Dr. Ha Viet Hung presented their research results about Vietnam’s electronic sectors.

Dr. Nguyen Tien Thong presented an analysis of the electronic sector and plan for the coming year.

“Estimate working skill’s demand basing on economic relatedness and complexity”

Dr. Tran Toan Thang will look for data to compare between Vietnamese domestic firms vs foreign companies operating in Vietnam

Individual meetings will be organized more frequently. It is expected a drafting paper of the development policy of electronic sector in the end of 2021.

Overview of Vietnam food processing sector

Dr. Nguyen Van Minh and Dr. Quach Thi Khanh Ngoc presented their research results about Vietnam’s food processing sector.

Dr. Nguyen Tien Thong gave suggestions for research directions for the food sector and plan for 2^nd year.

Prof. Ari Kokko added that Vietnam has now been able to meet the WTO’s requirements for food export. More attention might draw on traceability, labor practices as these are becoming more important issues for entering higher global market.

Individual meetings will be organized more frequently. A drafting paper of sustainable development and working skills demand is expected in 2021.

Research paper

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Dao presented some descriptions of prior data screening from manufacturing sector and suggestions for future papers

Prof. Ari Kokko suggested to look at not just FDI but also foreign wholesales firms’ activities

Dr. Dao is concerned about the availability of data on wholesale firms. Prof. Ari Kokko suggests to look at the exports sector only.

Dr. Thang said it might be difficult to find reliable data source. It could be a challenge to have access to data in specific aspects.

Research paper

Dr. Aradhna Aggarwal presented a research paper on India’s export performance and some prior findings in FDI growth in India recently.

Prof. Ari Kokko suggested to take out figures of China in the calculation to see if there is any significant change.

Project management

Research subcontracts: Contracts with Vietnamese researchers have been delayed. NTU is processing contracts with people outside of NTU. It is expected to send out next week.

Website of the project needed to be develop asap.

Dr. Ngan shall check with IT consultant to develop the project website

Dr. Ngan shall finalize contracts with Vietnamese researchers

Discussion

Dr. Arahdna suggested to have more specific schedules, tasks so members can be more involved in the project.

Individual meetings for specific research tasks will be organized more frequently.

Concluding remarks

Dr. Thong suggested meetings needed on designing of surveys/questionnaires as well as other project details. Time to be decided.

Prof. Ari Kokko thanked everyone for a productive meeting. The core team will discuss to identify ideas to move on with the project, then will share with everyone to discuss.
